Ultrasound Confirmation

Even if you have had a positive pregnancy test, it is important to have the test confirmed with an ultrasound exam. Approximately 25 percent of pregnancies end naturally in miscarriage. A good way to determine the likelihood of miscarriage is through an ultrasound exam.

The ultrasound can help answer the following questions:

Is the pregnancy located where it should be (in the uterus and not the tube)?
Approximately how far along are you?
Do we see what we would expect to see in a healthy early pregnancy since the miscarriage rate in early pregnancy is about 1 in 4?
Is there fetal cardiac activity?

If the pregnancy is not progressing normally, it will likely end naturally in miscarriage. In these cases, you may not need to experience the pain and cost of an abortion.
